Appearance: Genjo Sanzo is a 5' 10" man weighing in at 141 pounds who is in very good shape (and has a twenty-two inch waist >.>). He has short blond hair, blue-violet eyes with a tendency to droop, and a very handsome face (he is often called "womanly" or mistaken for a woman when he's in full monk attire - much to his annoyance). His normal attire is a pair of hiking boots (Reload!), jeans, a black sleeveless turtleneck and armbands, a long white robe with a black belt (and long sleeves he seems to hide everything in), a bamboo chest plate, and, when in full "formal" attire, a crown and veil. He normally wears the sacred Maten Scripture across his shoulders in a manner similar to a shawl, but since this was confiscated when he came to Econtra, he isn't wearing this.

Personality: Angry, bitter, vindictive, and egotistical. In short, Sanzo is a bastard to the highest level. Furthermore, despite being on of the five highest ranking monks in Shangri-La, the only one of his vows he has ever kept was chastity - but that's mainly because he hates it when people touch him or are around him for too long. He also has a will to live that surpasses most, and will NOT tolerate fools. He also won't hesitate to say what's on his mind if it needs to be said.

Abilities/Strengths: Sanzo's strength is his superb marksmanship skills. On top of that, he is excellent at hand-to-hand combat and has the charisma to attract followers to him that he he finds utterly annoying (seriously). He can also hear "voices" sometimes, especially when he's around bodies of water. HE finds this rather annoying, but it has proven useful on a few occasions - especially when someone he needs to find (most likely because they owe him money) is in distress.

Weapons: The Maten Scripture itself can be used as a weapon when Sanzo recites a certain sutra (ending in and usually shortened to "Makai Tenjou!") which then unleashes a wave of holy energy that decimates anything that gets caught in its path. Sanzo also keeps on him a "banishing gun" - which is essentially a sanctified Smith and Wesson with a sawed off gun barrel (it's almost Freudian, that gun). However, his "favored" weapon is his patented idiot fan - guaranteed to get annoying monkeys and lecherous kappas to shut up for at LEAST an hour with only one whack!

However, upon arriving in Econtra, all except for the fan get confiscated - we're assuming the Warden is keeping the Scripture safe, though.

Weaknesses: Besides eventually dying of lung cancer? >_>

Despite all his claims of nonattachment, he clings to the memory of his Master. This goes so far as to being incredibly irritable and depressed whenever it rains since his Master was killed on a rainy night (Lord knows he'll finally snap and have a nervous breakdown if he ever comes across Econtra's blood-like rain). He's also allergic to cats (the mun decrees this WILL extend to cat people) and can't stand them very much to boot.

Also, despite his violent temper, he suffers from low blood pressure, causing him to space out on occasion or even have dizzy spells - he has yet to actually faint from this, meaning it isn't TOO bad of a problem for him.

History:

Far past: Originally the God Konzen Douji, the incredibly bored secretary to the (Not So) Merciful Goddess Kanzeon Botatsu (also his aunt and not entirely a GodDESS herself). Due to several mishaps at the presentation ceremony, he came to be the keeper of one Son Goku while in Heaven. And was killed and put into the cycle of reincarnation when some gods tried to do some political maneuvering involving both Goku and the monkey's new friend, Nataku.

General Past: Genjo Sanzo was originally named Kouryuu by his adoptive father/predecessor Koumyo Sanzo, who had pulled him out of a river when he was a baby to save him from certain death. Little Kouryuu was extremely devoted to his Master/Father and loved the man more than life itself. Growing up in the Kinzan Temple, he grew close to a monk named Shuei who was a Charms Master he regarded as an older brother and was generally outcasted by the monks for being the favorite of Koumyo and for excelling in the magical and martial arts.

This all changed when Kouryu received his title as a Sanzo Priest, the equivalent of the Pope in Shangri-La's Buddhist Priesthood and keeper of the Scriptures of Heaven and Earth. Thieves broke in shortly after, leaving Koumyo dead and succeeding in stealing the Seiten Scripture. Kouryu left the temple the next morning, vowing t find and retrieve the Scripture at all costs.

He spent four years wandering the countryside in search of the Seiten Scripture, until he heard of the Yuigen Temple's Palace of the Setting Sun where one could speak with the Three Aspects. After a bit involving thieves and the head monk of the temple (whom is the one who turned Sanzo on to smoking) getting killed, Sanzo is appointed the new head of the Temple in return for the Three Aspects to give him eventual information on the Sutra's whereabouts. Shortly after he begins to hear a "voice" calling out to him and releases Son Goku from his prison. A year or so after that, he is sent on a mission to retrieve the Demon Slayer Cho Gonou and his roommate Sha Gojyo, who winds up becoming a close friend and ally after he is judged to have a new life as Cho Hakkai.

About three years after this begins the Saiyuki Proper, where Sanzo is ordered West to investigate the revival of the Demon King Gyuumaoh - which is causing all the youkai in the area to go berserk via the combination of science, magic, and the Seiten Sutra being used. He is forced to take along Goku, Gojyo, and Hakkai, and . . .

. . . Well, let's just say the people who are most surprised they haven't killed each other yet, is probably the various assassins sent after them because of their mission. ^^;

Recent Past: After things on the road being eerily quiet for about a month, Sanzo is finally beginning to relax around the others, when he suddenly gets a bad bout of nausea (which Gojyo claimed was 'morning sickness' as a joke) and suddenly found himself in the prison-city of Econtra without his gun or the Maten Scripture (much to his chagrin).

Cho Hakkai: A friend.

Mathiu Silverberg: Roommate, finds intelligent.

Sha Gojyo (AU): The Roach, doesn't really know how to handle so treats him like his Roach.

Xiao: Finds annoyingly hyperactive.

Luke fon Fabre (AU): A catboy he actually likes - mainly because he isn't annoying.

Yuuko Ichihara (AU): Finds annoying.
